This story is truly amazing and inspiring. It’s about a 66-year old Catholic father of 7 saving his 20-year old Down Syndrome son in a bizarre accident. The son fell into a septic tank, while the father jumped in to raise his son’s head above water until help arrived. Unfortunately in saving his son, he himself drowned.
This should cause us all to pause and think about the worth and dignity of each human being and how our current culture of death refuses to acknowledge this one simple principle. This father made the ultimate sacrifice in saving his disabled son. No greater love is there than to lay down one’s life for family and friends. Laying down one’s life can be a one-time event or it can last a lifetime. This father did both. We contrast this heroic event with the unmitigated and ravenous assault on innocent human life by a vicious and selfish culture which not only aborts healthy children, but aborts an estimated 90% of Down Syndrome children.
The culture therefore tells us what it thinks of the disabled: You’re not wanted and we won’t sacrifice for you. By contrast, this heroic man did the exact opposite and provided the ultimate counter witness by sacrificing his own life.
And what about us? Are we so comfortable with this current culture of death that we won’t venture out of our comfort zone, won’t take the risk of rocking the boat, won’t risk losing something?
“Unless you lose your life, you will never save it.” That’s what Jesus said.
